Charity roundtable explores fundraising strategies
I was delighted to join Jess Brown-Fuller MP at a charity roundtable event last week to discuss fundraising strategies with some of the brilliant charities and voluntary groups that provide support in Chichester.
Alongside Jess, we were joined by Tobias Stathers, Head of Fundraising at UKHarvest, and Samantha East, Head of Development at Pallant House Gallery. Each of us brought insights from different areas of fundraising: Tobias shared ideas on maximising business-to-charity relationships, Sam spoke about engaging and maintaining relationships with high-net-worth donors, and I covered best practice for making successful grant applications. The evening also included a Q&A session and valuable networking opportunities.
A key theme that emerged from the discussion was the increasing difficulty charities and voluntary organisations face in securing funding, with competition for grants seemingly at an all-time high. As a local funder, we understand how challenging this can be. However, we also highlighted the power of connection: how sharing knowledge, expanding fundraising networks, and building strong relationships can make a real difference.

We encouraged organisations to connect with Voluntary Action Arun & Chichester, which provides fundraising support and expertise, as well as opportunities to engage directly with funders through regular events.
Another important topic raised was the need for core cost funding, rather than trying to constantly innovate. Many charities struggle to secure funding for essential running costs to keep the organisation operating, for example for rent or utility bills for a workspace. We are proud to continue supporting core funding and are committed to IVAR’s Flexible Funders initiative (IVAR Flexible Funders), which holds funders to a set of principles around being more open and trusting with their grant-making.
It was fantastic to see so many dedicated charity representatives coming together to share ideas and solutions. A huge thanks to Jess and her team for making this happen.
