Down Syndrome Development Trust

Down Syndrome Development Trust improves the lives of people living with Down Syndrome in Sussex, offering a range of support services and specialist interventions for children and young people. They deliver virtual and live interventions in support of the young people and their family members.

Through the fund granted by the Foundation, the group offered an outstanding year of activities and adventures for their children and young people. Since the start of the programme they have seen individual progress and personal success and achievement with so many of the beneficiaries.

A member of staff wrote: “Parents tell us time and time again that we have literally provided a lifeline for their vulnerable children. For many families, the activities we provide are the only services available to them, and they are designed to support the individual according to their specific needs from birth to adulthood.”

Joe's Story

Joe (age 9) was given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including cycling, paddle boarding, sailing, equine therapy and online tutoring. This holistic approach has meant that he has gained considerable inner confidence. Joe has no speech and high levels of sensory processing issues which prevented him from accessing any community activity. Participating in these activities has meant that Joe’s motor skills, confidence, cognition and learning development greatly improved, alongside his understanding of his community and of himself.
