Amaze is a charity that gives information, advice and support to families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They operate in Brighton & Hove and across the whole of Sussex. The charity also organises regular social and support groups for parent carers and young people, as well as signposting to local services and training for families.
J's story
“J is a young person with SEND who has struggled in recent times with mental health issues. To help address these challenges, J joined Amaze as a volunteer to help run the peer support sessions. J’s mental wellbeing began to improve and, through this voluntary work, he discovered he had a talent for youth work. He was especially keen to show his advocacy of young people with SEND. To further pursue his passion, J changed his degree at university to Child and Adolescent Development. He continued to volunteer with Amaze, helping to plan and run its drama groups and lead the young people's Voice Group.
In 2023 J set-up gaming sessions based on feedback from the young people attending the group. He located a venue for the sessions, talked to the owner of the business and completed a risk assessment with the project co-ordinator. He then went on to successfully facilitate fortnightly gaming sessions.”
J’s work is a testament to the benefits of being a part of Amaze support group in Sussex.
