On Board With the Scouts

An amazing opportunity for the 3rd/5th Lancing Sea Scout Group came in 2019, when a large yacht was donated for use as a sail training vessel. The yacht required various repairs and needed to be adapted for disabled use but, thanks to a grant from the Foundation and the work of the many volunteers working on the project, the refit could go ahead. The team of volunteers brought the vessel up to Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) standards, learning as they went about marine safety, conservation, and sustainable use of resources.

Since the completion of the refit, the vessel, now called ‘Supeta’, has been used by the group to teach young people from all backgrounds and abilities how to sail and work together in a marine environment. The vessel has been offering amazing experiences to enjoy and opportunities to learn from, in an adventurous but safe way. The young participants have been taking part in onshore and offshore sports and recreational pursuits, developing essential practical and social skills.

A grant from the Rampion Community Benefit Fund

The grant was allocated from the Foundation through the Rampion Community Benefit Fund. The Fund supports organisations working within an area stretching from Littlehampton Harbour in the west to Beachy Head in the east and up to the A272 near Twineham in the north. It supports projects with a particular interest in the environment, ecology, climate change, energy and improved community facilities.
