Celebrating Sussex Day: our photo competition winners

Happy Sussex Day from all of us at Sussex Community Foundation! We are pleased to share our four photo competition winners to celebrate.

Each year, 16 June marks Sussex Day - a time to celebrate everything we love about our beautiful county. The date also honours St Richard’s Day, which commemorates St Richard, Bishop of Chichester from 1245 to 1253 and patron saint of Sussex.

To celebrate, we held our second Sussex Day Photo Competition, inviting entries that showcase the vital work happening in our communities. We were thrilled to receive such inspiring submissions from across the county.

We’re delighted to announce our four winning entries, each reflecting one of Sussex Community Foundation’s four funding priorities. Each winner will receive £100 to support their continuing work. The winners are:

  • Tackling poverty - Eastbourne Foodbank

  • Improving Health - Culture Shift
  • Reaching Potential - Sensory Soft Play

  • Acting on climate - Sussex Green Living

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone who entered!

“We are delighted that this photograph has won a prize, as it clearly shows the simple pleasure of a person finding joy in a creative activity! Helen - the star of this photo - is a carer who has been a regular member of our carers group (Carers O'Clock) for a number of years now. It has become a very important part of looking after her own health and wellbeing, alongside her responsibilities as a full-time unpaid carer. Many thanks to Sussex Community Foundation, we will buy some valuable art materials with the prize money!”

 Julia Roberts, CEO, Culture Shift

“Sussex Day is a chance to reflect on what makes our county special, and the incredible work of local charities is right at the heart of that. This competition captures the creativity, compassion and community spirit we see every day in the groups we support.”

Kevin Richmond, CEO of Sussex Community Foundation.

Whether you prefer a coastal walk or a countryside stroll, a visit to a vineyard or a paddle in the sea, there are so many ways to enjoy Sussex Day. If you’re feeling inspired, consider celebrating by donating to one of our funding priorities and help support brilliant local people and projects.
