Launch of our Reaching Potential report

On Tuesday, we gathered at the iconic Saltdean Lido to celebrate the launch of our Reaching Potential report, which highlights the challenges Sussex faces in education and employment, as well as the vital role local charities play in helping people reach their full potential.

It was also an opportunity for us to reflect on and celebrate the year at Sussex Community Foundation, during which we awarded £2.6 million to local charities and community groups.

Our CEO, Kevin Richmond, facilitated a brilliant panel discussion featuring three charities the Foundation proudly supports. We were joined by Cat Vizor from Esteem, James Amner from Spear Brighton, and Nicky Crabb from Little Green Pig. They each shared inspiring stories about the impact of their organisations on the community and children/ young people they support.

James told us about the Spear Programme, which helps young people aged 16-24 overcome barriers to employment. Through one-to-one coaching, the program equips them with the skills they need to thrive in the job market. James, a trustee and former volunteer, described the transformative journey participants go through:

“After a few weeks, it’s really satisfying seeing a different person present themselves”.

Cat, from Esteem, talked about creating safe spaces for young people aged 14-26, many of whom are neurodivergent or face mental health challenges. She explained how Esteem empowers young people by involving them in roles across the organisation, including as trustees.

By valuing their lived experiences, Esteem gives young people confidence and purpose. During challenging times, the number of young people seeking support continues to grow but Esteem make sure no one is ever turned away.

"Young people need a safe space where they can see a future."

Nicky Crabb of Little Green Pig shared heartwarming stories about how their work is helping children gain confidence and develop their literacy and creativity. She recounted how one child was so proud to see their writing published in one of their anthologies.

The Reaching Potential report sheds light on the critical challenges our county faces in education and employment, while highlighting the vital role that local charities play in empowering those who are disadvantaged to reach their full potential.
