Sussex in the City: Inspiring change for young people

Last month, Sussex Community Foundation was delighted to bring together our community at the renowned Mercers’ Hall, London, for Sussex in the City.

The event explored how philanthropists, charities and local partners can work together to address the challenges young people face today.

Guests were inspired by a powerful conversation between Sir Rod Aldridge and Summer and Val, Young Ambassadors at Flourish Mentors, who shared their perspectives on mentoring, opportunity, and the vital role communities play in helping young people thrive. Sir Rod reflected on his journey from founding Capita, a FTSE 100 company, to establishing the Aldridge Foundation and becoming a Fundholder at Sussex Community Foundation, driven by a desire to give back and support the next generation. Together, their stories illustrated the transformative power of philanthropy in creating opportunities and helping young people realise their potential.

The event also shared findings from our Reaching Potential report, sparking discussions on how we can better support young people in Sussex – whether through donating money, volunteering time, or sharing skills and expertise. Central to the conversations was the importance of ensuring young people’s voices are at the heart of our decision-making and our giving.

Attendees also had the chance to network with like-minded individuals, creating new connections and sharing ideas for future collaborations. The atmosphere was one of energy and optimism, with a shared belief that when people who care connect with causes that matter, real change happens.

A big thank you to all our guests, Sir Rod Aldridge and Flourish Mentors for helping make the day so meaningful and inspiring. If you're interested in supporting young people in your local community, find out more about our Reaching Potential fund.
